Ayushmann Khurrana in Shubh Mangal Saavdhan Suffers From Erectile Dysfunction: 5 Erectile Dysfunction Facts That You Didn’t Know

Recently the trailer of the movie Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Bhumi Pednekar, was launched and it turned out to be an unusual story about a couple dealing with a sexual problem.

The movie deals with the taboo topic of erectile dysfunction. In India, people are reluctant to talk about their sexual issues including erectile dysfunction, which is also called impotence. It is the condition where a man is unable to develop or maintain an erection even when aroused.

The organic causes of erectile dysfunction include diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, side effects of drugs and hormonal imbalance. The condition will not only affect the man’s sexual performance but also his overall confidence.

Here is a list of things you probably didn’t know about erectile dysfunction.

1. It can be genetic

Erectile dysfunction can be genetic. The relationship between genes and erectile dysfunction is being studied by genetic researchers. They are also looking into the possibility of gene therapy for the condition. The research is in the initial stages.

2. There is a link between erectile dysfunction and oral hygiene

You may not have known this but the condition of your gums and teeth has a direct link to erectile dysfunction. According to studies, the chances of experiencing erectile dysfunction are more in men with gum diseases as compared to those with good teeth and gums. Researchers think that the bacteria, which cause gum diseases, cause damage to blood vessels interfering with the blood flow.

3. Erectile dysfunction can indicate other medical conditions

Erectile dysfunction is not a disease and it is often a warning sign for other problems like heart diseases and high blood pressure. If you suffer from erectile dysfunction, it is advisable to consult your doctor as soon as possible to know the exact cause and any underlying medical condition.

4. Certain medications can cause erectile dysfunction

Consumption of certain medications or drugs can lead to erectile dysfunction. Antihistamines, antidepressants and diuretics are some of the medicines that have shown to cause erectile dysfunction.

5. There’s no connection between excessive masturbation and erectile dysfunction

Excessive masturbation does not cause erectile dysfunction. However, sometimes the psychological effect of frequent masturbation using porn can decrease a man’s ability to develop and maintain an erection with his real-life partner (Picture credit: Ayushmann Khurrana/Facebook).
