 shabbo sheikh acid attack survivor

At the tender age of two, Shabbo Sheikh from Mumbai encountered a horror. She endured an acid attack by her father that took away her mother and subjected her to numerous struggles in life.

Conquering all the hardships life threw her way, her story was brought to light by the Humans of Bombay. This young girl's resolve to lead a happy life despite everything is truly heroic.

Growing up in an orphanage, Shabbo received a lot of love and pampering. As she was never exposed to the outside world, the girl conscious of her appearance tried to hide from everyone during initial college days. Eventually, she broke that glass wall that was bringing her down and made friends with whom she has fond memories.

shabbo sheikh acid attack survivor

Even though such a tragedy can easily spiral the person towards hopelessness and isolation, this girl with undaunted spirits has voiced her story on Facebook which reads:

"When I was 2 years old, my father stormed into the house, where I was sitting on my mother’s lap and poured acid on her — half of which fell on me. I know this story from Doctor Gore, who treated me for the next few years because I don’t remember any of it — not even the pain. I just know that I lost my mother to that attack, and when my relatives heard of my condition — they disowned me. My father fled the city, and I grew up in an orphanage."

"Honestly, from my doctors to those at my orphanage — I’ve been pampered a lot. They showed me incessant, unconditional love for which I’m so thankful…my childhood really wasn’t as bad as it would seem.

Where I did struggle a little was when I stepped into the real world for college. Initially, I didn’t make any friends — I used to eat lunch alone, sit on the last bench and try my best to be invisible. I was so conscious of my scars that I felt like everyone was staring at me."

 shabbo sheikh acid attack survivor

"Turns out, it was all in my mind because I ended up making a lot of friends who I’ve had some of my happiest memories with. I remember this really funny incident when we were at a sleepover. I fell asleep but since the attack, my eyelids don’t shut – something my friends didn’t know. They kept talking to me for a long time only to realise I had been sleeping the whole time! We’ve made so many jokes about that — imagine how easy it was for me to sleep in my lectures — almost feels like I have a superpower!

Often my friends ask me if I hate my father and if I’m vengeful — and my answer is always ‘no’. Honestly, I’ve forgiven him. He must have been in a dark place himself to even think of committing such a crime…but me holding on to it is like feeding that darkness — I’ve let it go completely."

shabbo sheikh acid attack survivor

"I have no room in my life for hate — my entire focus is on finding a job. I was fired from my last job because of my appearance and because I took regular leaves for my check ups. Since then, I’m looked after by the Sahaas foundation but I’m hopeful that I’ll have another job soon!

Looking back, the only thing I hate about the entire incident is that people still refer to me as an ‘acid attack victim’ — I’m not a victim! I’m as normal as anybody else — I’ve embraced my scars and I’m really excited for the rest of my life to unfold. I have ambition, dreams and life goals…I want to make my mark in the world, not because of this acid attack …but everything I am, inspite of it."

Now 23, Shabbo aspires to have a career in stage design and costume styling. Awaiting funds to be raised for multiple reconstruction surgeries, she is determined to make something of herself and be happy.

Never letting her traumatic past dictate her life, Shabbo is a survivor, not a victim.

As Raksha Bandhan is approaching near, we get to remember how Bollywood celebrated the festival over these years through various songs that touched a chord with brothers and sisters on this day.

Raksha Bandhan strengthens the bond between brothers and sisters. The sister shows her affection by tying a sacred thread (popularly called as Rakhi) around her brother's wrist, praying for his well-being and the latter promises to protect her all his life.

Here we remember all these top six songs over the years that add a unique significance to the festival:

1) Phoolon Ka Taron Ka: This is probably the most popular and deeply loved song based on brother-sister bond. The song was sung by Kishore Kumar.

2) Behna Ne Bhai Ki Kalai Se: This is another equally famous Raksha Bandhan song that will add to the celebration.

3) Ise Samjho Na Resham Ka Tar Bhaiya: This melodious track highlights a sister's unconditional love for her brother.

4) Bhaiya Mere Rakhi Ke Bandhan Ko Nibhana: This song has been sung by Lata Mangeshkar. It is one of the oldest tracks on Raksha Bandhan but certainly a delight to the ears.

5) Mere Bhaiya Mere Chanda: This is another old track showcasing the purity and beauty that the relationship carries. It has been sung by Asha Bhosle.

6) Ye Rakhi Bandhan Hai Aisa: This 1972 song from the movie "Beimaan" is another track to fit your playlist on the day.

So, gear up for the celebration of Raksha Bandhan with these popular songs.

Rakhi 2018, Raksha Bandhan 2018 Puja Vidhi, Muhurat, Timings

Raksha Bandhan, the festival that reinforces the bond between brother and sister is here. Raksha Bandhan is a special time for all brothers and sisters as they celebrate the bond of love and trust between them. Raksha Bandhan is a traditional Hindu festival. It includes the ritual of a sister tying a sacred thread ('Rakhi') or a knot around her brother’s wrist, symbolically expressing her love for him and seeking his protection in return. This year, the festival of Raksha Bandhan will be celebrated on August 26, which falls on a Sunday.

The Shubh Muhurat to tie Rakhi will begin at 5:59 am in the morning and conclude at 5:25 pm in the evening. The full moon or Shravan Poornima has already begun at 3:16 pm on Saturday and will continue till 5:25 pm on 26 August 2018, Sunday. As per astrology, tying Rakhi during the Aprahan Muhurat is considered auspicious and the same will be observed from 1:39 pm to 4:12 pm on Raksha Bandhan 2018.

Rakhi 2018, Raksha Bandhan 2018 Puja Vidhi, Muhurat, Timings

Raksha Bandhan is a Sanskrit word, where ‘Raksha’ means ‘Protection’ and ‘Bandhan’ means ‘to tie’, it basically means ‘to tie the knot of protection’. It is also called as Kajri Purnima or Kajri Navami in Northern India. The festival falls on the Hindu month of Shravan during Purnima Day. Raksha Bandhan is celebrated with great pomp and enthusiasm in India, mostly in the North and North-Western states.

The story Raksha Bandhan has a mythological significance as well. One fine morning, when Lord Krishna was flying a kite, he cut his finger on the string of the kite. Draupadi, on seeing blood coming out of his finger, ran to him, tore a piece of cloth from her sari and tied it on his bleeding finger. Lord Krishna was so touched by this that he promised to protect her from all evil in return. And as is known, he did protect her when the Kauravas tried to humiliate her.

Often believed to be a festival exclusive to the Hindu community, it generally is not the case. The festival of Raksha Bandhan is quite secular and an inclusive one. The significance of the festival lies in its expression of love. As the years have passed by, it has evolved in its sense and expression.

Timings and Muhurat:

The Raksha Bandhan thread ceremony will begin at 05:59 am and continue till 05:25 pm. The duration being 11 hours and 26 minutes.

The Aparahan time Raksha Bandhan Muhurat will start from 01:39 pm to 04:12. The duration is two hours and 33 minutes.

Purnima tithi begins — 03:16 pm on August 25;
Purnima tithi ends — 05:25 pm on August 26.

Puja Vidhi:

As per religious experts, the Rakhi Puja Thali must have chandan (sandalwood) and akshat (rice) for tilak, roli (sacred threads of saffron and red color), rakhi, deepak and sweets to offer to brother(s).

The rakhi and roli should be tied on the right hand and tilak must be applied in between the brows to activate the Agni chakra, followed by performing Aarti of the brother while rhyming mantra or just praying for his good health and happiness. The siblings must then offer sweets to each other. If the brother is younger then he must take her Aashirwaad with charan sparash. Brothers can then present gifts to their sisters.

Most importantly, the family and siblings must pray for their togetherness in good and bad times, and give unconditional support to each other at all times.

Happy Rakshabandhan 2018!
