Shab e Barat 2018:

Shab e-Barat, also known as Mid-Sha’ban or Bara’at Night, is a Muslim holiday which is observed all over the world on the evening between the 14th and the 15th Sha’ban, the eighth month of the Islamic calendar. In Islam, Shab-E-Barat means the night of forgiveness or Day of Atonement.

According to information on Wikipedia, the word ‘Barat’ means ‘the quality of being guileless’, or ‘without guile or deception’. This year, the month began on April 18, which means the festival this year takes place from dusk on Tuesday, May 1 until dawn the following day. In the Arab world, the festival is referred to as Laylat al-Bara’at. The festival falls in the run-up to Ramadan and is considered the night when God forgives sinners.

The holy Shab-e-Barat will be observed tonight across the country with due religious fervor and devotion. It is regarded as the evening when all of the men’s fortunes for the upcoming year are decided and also the time when Allah may forgive those who have sinned. In some Muslim countries, it is also a night to honor those ancestors who have come before you. Muslim devotees will spend the night at mosques and homes offering prayers, reciting from the holy Quran and seeking blessings of Allah for long life, peace, progress and happiness for themselves, their families, relatives and friends.

Muslims believe that on this night Almighty Allah decides the fate of all human beings fixing their “rizq” (livelihood) for the next year. The devotees visit the graves of their loved ones at night and will pray for their eternal peace. Many will also visit shrines of saints. Many families will prepare traditional foods like rice bread and halua (a kind of dessert made usually from semolina, carrot, chickpea or papaya).

In Bangladesh, many people will fast on the day after the Shab e-Barat night and in South Asia individuals hand out food and aid to their neighbors and the poor. The date of Shab e Barat is also celebrated as the birthday of Muhammad al-Mahdi, who is commemorated by Twelver Shia Muslims as being the savior of mankind.

Ramadan 2018 will begin in the evening of Tuesday, May 15, and will end in the evening of Thursday, June 14.

76-Year-Old Oxford Graduate Living On Streets Since Last 40 Years

No matter how much we talk about the disadvantages of the internet and social media platform but for some, it could be ‘gift of God’ if used wisely. One of them whose life transformed because of the internet is a 76-year-old Sikh man who has spent almost four decades of his life on the streets of Delhi despite being an Oxford University graduate. Facebook changed the life of Raja Singh Phull, who claims to have been a professor at Oxford University.

76-Year-Old Oxford Graduate Living On Streets Since Last 40 Years

Raja Singh’s tragic life story became public and reached masses when a good samaritan shared it on Facebook along with this old man’s pictures. His life took a brutal turn and brought him on streets at the New Delhi Railway Station. His story touched thousands of hearts and help came in abundance. By God’s grace and internet’s help, he has a home now.

Phull came to India after his brother asked him to. They together started a business that went down after his brother’s death. His sons abandoned him and are now settled in abroad. But begging was never an option for this old man. To meet his needs, he helped people fill forms outside the Vica Centre in Delhi. He never asked people for money, kept whatever they offered him for helping them with the forms. When there is no work, he relies on Gurudwara’s langar.

Avinash Singh took the responsibility to help this old man and shared his story on Facebook. The story has got more than 5000 shares and people have actually come forward to generously help him. Here’s what Avinash wrote:

He is an Oxford graduate who shifted to India on the insistence of his brother in the Sixties – 60s.

Today 76-year-old Raja Singh Phull is living a nomad’s life — sleeping at New Delhi Railway, getting ready at a Delhi Government’s sauchalaya at Connaught Place – the first one on the left as you hit CP from Panchkuian Road — and sits through the day at Visa Centre next to Shivaji Stadium Airport Metro Station at Baba Khadak Singh Marg next to Hanuman Mandir! “I fill forms, help and guide people earning from zero to 100 rupees, sometimes more!”

His eye sight and his legs are failing yet he pulls on barely making his both ends meet! He leaves Railway station at 6- 15 am. Will be at CP Sauchalaya by 6-40 am going through daily cores, washing his clothes tying his turban with the help of a pocket mirror and have a cup of tea ! If there is money a rusk or two would act as breakfast!

There are days that Raja Singh has gone without proper food! “You are not well and there is no earning you will go without a sqare meal ,” quips the old man in immaculate English with a chaste diction!

What about kids and family? After moving to India he and brother B S Phull tried hands at various businesses! While brother was more into drinking “I did lot of hardwork and sent two of my sons for studies abroad,”he adds! Raja Singh even took loans for his children! Today they are in UK and the US well settled with firangi wives not having time for their father who is living by the roadside in the National Capital!

Raja Singh is a staunch Sikh too! He has been attached to ‘Guru Ghar’ all his life! He avoids partaking Langar at Gurdwara Bangla Sahib! “I earn and buy my food. For Langar I need to contribute. If I’m unable I do not have no right to eat there.” There are, however, occasions when there is no work and you are dependent on Bhandaras at Hanuman Temple and community kitchen at the Gurdwara!

Raja Singh has no remorse that his relations after he lost his wife are mostly wary of him. No help has come from government or any other quarters! He has got a cell but he cannot get a SIM for want of Aadhar card and a permanent address! He has only one prayer, “God should never force me to beg”! He was reluctant to accept help but with failing health he will need succour sooner or later!

Those willing to contribute can contact 7042715788! He is still willing to work if there it comes with a place to stay! Any takers!!!!

According to NDTV, Phull has now moved into an old age home to spend the rest of his life at peace. From considering our happiness as theirs to teaching us ways to survive in this world, parents do this all for us. Then why we fail when it’s our turn to take care of them? No relationship is bigger than the one we have with our parents and children should not forget this.

Cwg2018, India vs Pakistan

Pakistan held India to a 2-2 draw after the latter fumbled a two-goal cushion and conceded in the last play of the game in the Men’s Hockey opening game of Pool B. In what appeared to be a scene straight from some high-octane sports drama, Pakistan went on to score in the very last second after the men in green were awarded a controversial penalty corner. Ali Mubashar slammed the ball into the nets low and hard, and Indian goalkeeper P Sreejesh, who was in terrific form, could not dive to his right in time to make the save.

With 7 seconds to go, Pakistan received a penalty corner which was saved by Sreejesh. But the side appealed for a review, claiming there was a foot involved from an Indian defender. Even though the replays could not verify the claim, the decision was given in Pakistan’s favour by the referee, and they made the most of the decision.

India started the game in spectacular fashion as they raced away to a two-goal lead before halftime. The first goal saw Dilpreet Singh hammer the ball into the nets after receiving a pass from SV Sunil. Harmanpreet Singh doubled India’s lead in the second quarter after converting a penalty corner. Pakistan found a way to come back into the match in the third quarter, with Muhammad Irfan Jr finding the back of the net.
