Eid 2016: Moon sighted in Kargil, official confirmation on Eid-ul-Fitr in Jammu & Kashmir awaited

Srinagar, July 5: Moon has been sighted in the region of Kargil, falling at the India~Pakistan border near Line of Control (L.O.C). Eid ul Fitr would be celebrated in Kargil sector of Jammu & Kashmir and Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK). Official confirmation about rest of Jammu & Kashmir is awaited.

The sighting of moon in Kargil sector has been confirmed by both Jamiat e Ulama Asna Asharia and Imam Khomeini Memorial Trust Kargil, the Sunni and Shia religious outfits respectively.

Eid is one of the most important festivals for the Muslim fraternity. It is one of those events which highlights the brighter side of their 1,400 year old religion.

The crescent moon spotted on 29th day of Ramazan marks the end of the month. On 1st of Shawwal, Eid ul Fitr is celebrated. However, Eid moon is yet to be sighted in other parts of India.

Only the state of Kerala has announced Eid tomorrow since it follows the Shafi’i school of thought, and hence, equates the schedule of Islamic events with the one observed in Saudi Arabia, the heartland of Islam.

Eid is celebrated as a holiday across India. All public institutions will remain closed. Most of the private sectors would also provide holidays to the white collared employees on the occasion of Eid ul Fitr.
