Udta Punjab which stars Alia Bhatt, Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor and Diljit Dosanjh in lead roles, will release on June 17, this Friday. The film had fallen prey to censorship but that didn’t stop the film makers to challenge CBFC’s irrational decision.
Udta Punjab verdict is out is it is cleared with 1 cut!
Here is what the Bombay High Court has said:
Makers have the right to decide on the setting of the film.
Dual meaning should not be encouraged.
There is nothing in the film that affects nation’s sovereignty, said the HC.
Film makers have only highlighted facets of drug menace.
Bombay HC has also said that CBFC does not have power to censor films.
Cuts suggested should be in consonance with Constitution and SC orders.
Scenes which glamourise drungs must not be shown.
No-one can interfere if creative freedom is abused.
The film does not glorify drugs.
There is no need to assert or incorporate abusive words in every dialogue.
Cut no 6 are general words ( MP,MLA,Parliament etc),don’t refer to any outfit but reflect for general political work.
Cut suggestion no 8 not necessary.. only one close up scene of injecting drug will not violate the mandate.
As far as cut no 5 suggested by CBFC is concerned, there are some abusive words, some abusive words need to be deleted.
Punjab polls in 2017, film not made with elections in mind.
Punjab is land of green revolution, brave soldiers. Sentence, “Zameen banjar te aulaad kanjar” can’t affect that image.
On cut no 9 (Tommy Singh urinating in front of crowd) ,we don’t feel that this scene is necessary
CBFC chief Pahlaj Nihalani had demanded that the makers should remove ‘Punjab’ from the title and that all references to Punjab and political terms like ‘MLA’, ‘MP’ should also be removed. Further, as many as 89 cuts were demanded by the Censor Board leaving no other option for film makers rather than to take the matter to High Court.
The entire nation and the whole film fraternity came out in support of director Anurag Kashyap who decided to take this matter to the High Court.
