
Islamabad: An octogenarian Hindu man, identified as Gokul Das, was brutally beaten by police in Sind region for eating during the fasting hours of Ramazan. The incident took place in Hayat Pitafi village, falling in remote Ghotki district. The policeman, along with his brother, who thrashed the old Hindu man have been arrested.
Police SHO of the region, Bachol Qazi has confirmed that Hindu man was attacked on Friday evening when he was spotted eating biryani by police constable Ali Hassan. The cop, along with his brother Mir Hassan, threw the Hindu man on the ground and began striking him with baton. SHO Qazi has assured stern action against the policeman and his brother. “They have been taken into custody. We will seek their remand for further investigation,” he said while speaking to Express Tribune.
After beating Gokul Das, the duo left him in bleeding on the ground.However, the passerbys took the old man to nearby hospital in Mirpur Mathelo where he was treated. (ALSO READ: Pakistani Hindus to get Indian nationality via hassle-free process; Modi-government set to amend Citizenship Act 1955)
The civil society, along with secular politicians in Pakistan were aggrieved by the action exhibited towards the Hindu man by the police forces.
Through a trending social media campaign, pressure was created by the socially conscious citizens on the authority, demanding action for the atrocity against the minority.
According to Pakistani daily Dawn, the accused policeman, along with his brother has been booked under sections 337, 504 and 506/2 of Pakistan Penal Code. Apart from SHO Qazi, Ghotki’s Superintendent of Police, Masood Bangash has assured strict action against the constable Hassan and his brother for attacking the Hindu man.
