Euro Cup 2016: Switzerland, Romania play out enthralling 1-1 draw

After a month of rains in France, the sun shone brightly in the capital and what that produced is two teams with a fierce will to win in the Euro 2016, Group A game. It was a lack of finesse, composure and cutting edge in the final third that was the theme of this contest. Switzerland’s attacking quartet of the mercurial Xherdan Shaqiri, Berlim Dzemaili, Granit Xhaka and co couldn’t find the final pass. Bogdan Stancu became the top scorer of the tournament, netting his second penalty of the tournament while a thumping finish from inside the box from Mehmadi ensured that the Swiss got a share of the spoils.

It looked like this game would have ended in a historic Romanian win but the writing was always on the wall and Switzerland are too good a team not to score a goal. The game started in a lively manner with both sides attacking from end to end and one thing was certain: The match was going to produce goals and it came through a silly error from the Swiss defense. Stephen Litchsteiner tugged onto the shirt of Stancu, as the Romanian lined up to take the shot. for the Juventus right back, it was right in front of the referee’s nose. Up stepped Stancu and sent the Yan Sommer the wrong way.

It was still the Swiss who saw more of the ball and were asking questions in midfield. When it came to the finishing part, they looked confused and good buildup play went astray. The Romanians were striving hard on the break too. Making their first appearance in 16 years, they stretched France for large intervals in the first game and here again, they had spunk and definitely looked threatening in the final third. Switzerland, with the quality that they have in their ranks definitely had the match by the scruff of the neck but that didn’t necessarily translate into chances. That was the side’s Achilles Heel but are in a position where a draw will confirm their qualification to the next round.
