Euro Cup 2016 England Vs Russia Goals & Video Highlights: Vasili Berezutski secures late 1-1 draw for Russia against England

It was a game of two halves for England in their tournament opener against Russia and it was a fair result in the balance of play. However, on the basis of England creating so many chances up front, and passing and winning the ball back aggressively, they probably deserved better.

Perhaps, nobody deserved a win in this contest when Vasili Berezutski ghosted his way into the box and rose above Danny Rose to crack a powerful header past Joe Hart and into the net. The match swung back and forth for long spells in the second half.

England though, were the better team throughout the game; they had extended spells of possession and had piled on the pressure on Russia in the first half. Eric Dier was winning the ball brilliantly and the men in front of him — Wayne Rooney, Raheem Sterling, Adam Lallana along with Delle Alli and Harry Kane were prowling around the penalty area and created several chances. Russia need their goalkeeper, Igor Akinfeev to be in top form and so he was; his save off Rooney in the second half was the stuff that only a David de Gea or Manuel Neuer could have pulled off. There were wasteful attempts from Kane and Lallana too. The Liverpool midfielder in particular, was a constant threat in the box and could have had a couple.

Rose also had a good game and could have hardly been faulted for Russia’s goal. The England left-back had space to work his way down the left channel and supplemented the attack well. Alli and Kane, like they do at Tottenham Hotspur, were fantastic up front and only the end product was missing from their play. It looked like Lenoid Slutsky had infused a bit of energy into the Russian ranks with his pep talk at half time. The 2018 World Cup hosts pegged England back and had troubled Hart on a couple of occasions. Dier deserved a win for the sheer quality of his performance and the goal, which was an expertly taken free-kick; Akinfeev took a step forward and the Spurs midfielder slapped the ball past the ‘keeper with his instep. With 45 seconds left on the clock, Berezutski showed his class.
