Anju Bobby George steps down as the Kerala Sports Council President after public row with EP Jayarajan





Athlete Anju Bobby George who is the President of Kerala Sports Council resigned after spat with Left Democratic Front (LDF)’s Sports Minister EP Jayarajan. 12 other council members also resigned along with her. Earlier this month, Anju had alleged Jayarajan of harassing him and leveled corruption charges against her. Anju also took up the matter with Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan and submitted complaint to him.

Jayarajan said that Anju’s travel tickets from  Bangalore to Kerala was fudged. While Ajnu said that her air travel had been sanctioned by a Government order which was issued by the Finance Ministry. She also said that the minister reversed decisions which were made by the council. After the controversy made headlines, she said issued an open letter stating that she was returning  Rs 40,000 that she had received for air fare from finance ministry.

Talking to journalists after the council meeting, she said that the members could not continue in their posts with the ongoing controversy surrounding them. She also said that sportspersons in Kerala also have to deal with corruption. News Minute quoted her saying, “Sportspersons can’t be defeated by politics.”

Ajnu also alleged that there are discrepancies in government’s Sports Lottery Scheme. She also said that her official email account had been hacked. Jayarajan accused Anju of misuse of funds and harassed her and other members of the council. The minister also threatened her with consequences and said that now that LDF is in power, she will have to face consequences.

Anju was appointed as the sports council chief by the previous Oommen Chandy-led UDF government.
