Samsung Galaxy S7, S7 Edge: 7 things you REALLY need to know !

 Samsung Galaxy S7, S7 Edge

SAMSUNG has finally unveiled its latest flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. Here’s 7 things you need to know about the South Korean’s new handset, including the latest features, specifications, prices, release date and more.

Samsung has lifted the lid on its hotly-anticipated Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge smartphones.
The South Korean technology firm unveiled the new flagship devices at its Unpacked Event in Barcelona.

The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge certainly aren’t cheap, but they are packed with new features to be excited about.

After spending a few minutes testing the device, it became clear that Samsung can still make a great Android phone.

The Galaxy S7 is all about refinement: The camera is, once again, better than last year’s model. The build quality has been improved again, too. But most important of all, Samsung brought back the expandable memory slot, so you can increase your storage with a cheap micro-SD card.

There’s a lot to love in the Galaxy S7, and its slightly thinner counterpart, the Galaxy S7 Edge. Here’s a quick rundown of the 7 things you need to know about the new devices:

#1 – Water Resistant

After weeks of leaks (no pun intended) Samsung finally confirmed the rumours – the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge are completely waterproof.

Although the Galaxy S5 was water resistant, Samsung dropped its IP rating last year as part of its smartphone redesign.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge both carry a resistance rating of IP68, meaning they can survive 30 minutes in water at a depth of 1.5metres.

It’s worth remembering that these tests are performed in a controlled environment with clean drinking water – the Galaxy S7s won’t be quite as happy if they go for an impromptu swim in salt water.

#2 Battery Life: The Galaxy S7 is now “Always On”

Galaxy S7 Hands-On: The Six Things You Need to Know
Samsung faced a little criticism over the battery life of its dramatically-redesigned Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge smartphones.

But the South Korean firm appears to have addressed the issues with the latest flagship devices.

Samsung has managed to squeeze a hefty 3,000mAh battery into the Galaxy S7, and a whopping 3,600mAh capacity into the styllish Galaxy S7 Edge.

That's about 18 per cent larger than last year, and as a result, the smartphone manufacturer claims you'll be able to binge-watch more than an entire season of Game of Thrones – some 12 hours of video playback in total – before running flat.

And when the device runs out of juice, Galaxy S7 owners can fast-charge the handset using the microSD cable or wireless charging pad.
Lots of smartphones have tried to provide around-the-clock information without completely draining the battery, but Samsung thinks its finally solved the puzzle.
With its energy-efficient AMOLED display and Snapdragon 820 processor, the Galaxy S7 comes with an always-on option that can show the time, calendar, notifications, or even spartan wallpaper designs.
The only downside is that the options are somewhat limited, and you can’t read notifications. But if Samsung can truly bring all this info to the lock screen without sacrificing on battery life, it’d be a big plus.

#3 The “Edge” sucks way less

Galaxy S7 Hands-On: The Six Things You Need to Know
When Samsung launched the S6 Edge, it definitely had “woah” street appeal, but not much else. Now, Samsung’s doubling-down on its edgy decision by adding many more panels when you swipe from the side of the phone. Some of the new panels are even made by third-party developers. The edge feature is fully customizable and lets you build easy shortcuts to IFTTT-style commands. For example, if you tend to send a lot of emails to your boss, you can automate a shortcut that will automatically open your email client with your boss’s information already filled in.
The standard S7 comes with the improved apps edge (app shortcuts), people edge (contacts shortcuts), and the all-new tasks edge. These shortcut sidebars are now twice as big, too, giving you space to add even more shortcuts. But the bigger 5.5-inch S7 Edge comes with a few more extras. The phone will still do its light dance when one your favorite contacts tries to call you, it looks like this on last year’s S6:

Samsung also decided to partner with Yahoo for an improved edge experience on the larger S7 Edge smartphone. Yahoo brings sports scores, breaking news, and a bunch of other options that make the “Edge” feature a less of a gimmick and more of something you’d want to have.

#4 – Add More Memory

After disappearing from the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, expandable storage is back in the S7

Samsung has included the ability to expand the internal memory via microSD, an option that was dropped in the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge MicroSD cards fit alongside the Nano SIM card in a redesigned hybrid SIM tray.

Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge owners can add some 200GB of additional memory to their device.

#5 – Improved Cameras

Samsung’s latest camera is physically smaller, but much more powerful

Revered photography gurus DxOMark branded the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge their top-ranked device last year, so Samsung had a great starting point.

Aside from the improvements to image quality and performance, Samsung has also slimmed down the profile of its rear camera module.

The camera bump now only accounts for a svelte 0.46mm, compared to last year’s slightly-unsightly 1.7mm protrusion.

Both new Samsung smartphones ship with a 12MP Dual Pixel Sensor that’s faster to focus and lets in more light to achieve better low-light snaps.
On the software side, Samsung has added Motion Panoramas – which brings moments to your static photos.

As you pan around the panorama – movements captured while you were panning around the scene are recreated on the full-width of the display.

It’s a little gimmicky, but a nice addition.

Samsung has also improved its five-megapixel front-facing snapper for better selfies and Skype video calls.

#6 – Mobile Gaming Gets A Boost

Samsung has brought a slew of customisability to your mobile gaming with its new preinstalled app

Samsung is particularly proud of the Galaxy S7’s gaming prowess.

The latest flagship smartphones ensure longer playing time, thanks to the ex-NASA liquid cooling technology included in the Galaxy S7.

There’s also a new preinstalled Game Launcher app that brings a slew of new customisation options to their mobile games.

Samsung’s software lets you customise the amount of notification that can interrupt your video games – limiting texts, app notifications or voice calls.

You can also record the games on-screen and share the results via social media. Samsung has even included the ability to share your screen and play with others.

#7 – Secure, Contactless Payments

Both new Galaxy S7 smartphones are compatible with the South Korean firm’s contactless payment solution, Samsung Pay.

The tap-to-pay solution works with both contactless payment terminals and swipe-to-pay card machines.

This makes it one of the most flexible and widely accepted smartphone payment solutions available today.

Samsung is also pretty pleased with the security its system offers, thanks to the use of the fingerprint scanner to authenticate purchases, the tokenisation of your payment details and the use of Samsung KNOX to store your information securely on the device.
