Indian eves continue winning run, beat Lanka 12-1




 (PTI) Indian women's hockey team continued its rampagning form and thrashed a hapless Sri Lanka 12-1 to register its second consecutive win in the 12th South Games.

The Indian eves started on an attacking note and scored as early as in the fourth minute through a field strike from Rani.

The hosts kept on pressing hardand their efforts were rewarded soon in the form a a penalty corner, which was duly converted by Jaspreet Kaur in the eighth.

The Lankan defence seemed helpless against the Indian attack, which extended their lead by another four consecutive field goals through Sonika (13th), Soundarya Yendala (14th and 27th) and Jyoti Gupta (19th) respectively.

The Indian eves continued to score goals at will with another penalty conversion in 32nd minute from Jaspreet Kaur and enhanced the scoreline to 7-0 in their favour at the end of the first half.

The second half began with the Sri Lankan girls trying hard to stop the Indian forwards from penetrating into their circle, but their efforts failed as Jaspreet struck a field goal in the 38th minute and followed it up with a penalty stroke conversion in the 42nd minute extending the home team's lead to 9-0.

Vice-captain Deepika added to the Sri Lankan woes scoring another field goal in the 47th minute before Jaspreet added fifth goal to her kitty in the 57th minute through a penalty corner.

The Lankan's scored a solitary field goal through PACD Premasiri in the 58th minute.

The Indian girls wrapped up the match with another penalty corner conversion from Gurji Kaur in the dying minutes to register the convincing win.

India now leads the points table with six points and will take on the winner of today's round robin match between Sri Lanka and Nepal in the gold medal match on February 11.
