Dozens of police vehicles are at the Northlake Mall in Charlotte, North Carolina after receiving reports of shots fired.
It
was crowded with shoppers on Christmas Eve, one of the busiest shopping
days of the year, when officers from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police
Department arrived.
Witnesses
reported hearing at least seven gunshots being fired at the mall and
hundrers of terrified shoppers were seen fleeing for their lives.
Firefighters were also on the scene.
There is a heavy police presence in North Carolina following the gunshots.
Emergency crews and police rushed to the mall just after 2 p.m.
Medical responders said three people are being treated, after a person suffered a leg injury.
The
exact motive of the shooting is not yet clear, but witnesses have
reported hearing an argument moments before the shooting began.
The combination of scared shoppers fleeing the centre and emergency service vehicles arriving caused a chaotic atmosphere.
An employee of a shop at the centre reported five gun shots in total.
Police
set up a incident command centre and there were reports that one person
had a leg injury, another had an asthma attack and another person was
in labour.
