Chandra Grahan 2017 or Lunar Eclipse Timings

On August 7, Monday, Lunar Eclipse or Chandra Grahan will take place at 10:42 pm and end by 12: 38 am. Lunar Eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly behind the Earth into its umbra (shadow).

But the Sutak, defined as the period of abstention observed by the Hindus after birth or a death of a family member, begins seven hours before the Lunar Eclipse and according to the traditions, a holy event is not observed during this phase. Thus, time period reduces the window of auspicious Muhurat timings to perform Raksha Bandhan festival.

According to Jyotishastra, the auspicious timings for Rakhi will be from 8:50 am to 1:50 pm. Meanwhile, claims that as per Dharma Sindhu, for Raksha Bandhan ceremony only Bhadra time is prohibited. Sutak timings are applicable for Sankranti, and Lunar Eclipse does not apply to Raksha Bandhan ceremony.
