Raksha Bandhan 2017 Date in India with Chandra Grahan Timings: Shubh Muhurat to Tie Rakhi with Puja Vidhi

Raksha Bandhan 2017 falls on August 7, Monday the holy day of Shravan Purnima. The Hindu festival celebrated in the honour of brother and sister relationship falls on the full moon or purnima day.

Due to the occurrence of Lunar Eclipse (Chandra Grahan timings) on the same date in India has led to confusion over shubh muhurat timings to tie the rakhi and complete Raksha Bandhan puja vidhi. According to Hindu traditions, the best time to tie Rakhi on Raksha Bandhan is during Aparahna, which is late afternoon but owing to the Chandra Grahan 2017 Timings, Raksha Bandhan puja vidhi or rituals of tying a rakhi should be completed in the morning.

On no account should the auspicious Raksha Bandhan 2017 festival be celebrated during the Bhadra Nakshatra time, which is considered dangerous. Raksha Bandhan is a major Hindu festival, first celebrated by Lord Krishna and his sister Subhadra and is now celebrated with much joy and fervor.

Muhurat Timings to tie Rakhi on Raksha Bandhan

After many years Chandra Grahan is falling on Raksha Bandhan. The most auspicious timings to celebrate Raksha Bandhan i.e. tie a rakhi to the brother and complete the puja rituals is during the Aparahna which is late afternoon, according to the Hindu division of the day.

If the Raksha Bandhan puja is not possible to observe during that time, sisters can tie rakhi during Pradosh time. But on any account, Raksha Bandhan rituals should not be conducted during Bhadra time. Bhadra Nakshatra is considered to be a dangerous time to carry out any auspicious event. It is believed that Demon King Ravana doomed because his sister Shurpanakha tied him a rakhi and celebrated Raksha Bandhan during the Bhadra time.

Chandra Grahan 2017 or Lunar Eclipse Timings

On August 7, Monday, Lunar Eclipse or Chandra Grahan will take place at 10:42 pm and end by 12: 38 am. Lunar Eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly behind the Earth into its umbra (shadow).

But the Sutak, defined as the period of abstention observed by the Hindus after birth or a death of a family member, begins seven hours before the Lunar Eclipse and according to the traditions, a holy event is not observed during this phase. Thus, time period reduces the window of auspicious Muhurat timings to perform Raksha Bandhan festival.

According to Jyotishastra, the auspicious timings for Rakhi will be from 8:50 am to 1:50 pm. Meanwhile, DrikPanchang.com claims that as per Dharma Sindhu, for Raksha Bandhan ceremony only Bhadra time is prohibited. Sutak timings are applicable for Sankranti, and Lunar Eclipse does not apply to Raksha Bandhan ceremony.

Shravan Purnima 2017

Raksha Bandhan 2017 is falling on the last Shravan Somvar i.e. August 7 date making it even more significant.
