15 Underrated Horror Movies That Are So Scary You’ll Keep The Lights On Tonight

It takes people a while to warm up to horror movies (at least, it did for me), but once you get into them, it's hard to stop. There's something about that rush man, it's like a freakin' drug, and I'm addicted. Unfortunately, a lot of the produce on the commercial airwaves is of sub-standard quality, pandering to the whims of the lowest common denominator. 

That's why this list exists, to cover some of the best, and sadly most underrated horror movies you should get your (sweaty) hands on!

1. It Follows (2014):


A bunch of teens in an eerie town start being constantly followed by strangers, thanks to a curse passed on via sexual intercourse.

Carefree teen Jay sleeps with her new boyfriend, only to realise she's been cursed via sexual intercourse, and there's always going to be someone/something sinister following her. This is honestly one of the best horror movies I've ever seen in my life. Seriously, it's creepy as fuck, and quite a wild ride!



2. The Loved Ones (2009):


A high schooler kidnaps and tortures a boy after he refuses her invitation to the school prom.

 

When Brent turns down Lola's invitation to the school prom, she doesn't exactly take it too well. And by that, I mean she goes total psycho-kidnapper-sadist on his ass. This 2009 Ozzy flick is one twisted little piece of cinema.


3. The Witch (2015):

A family's youngest son disappears and is thought to have been picked up by a witch in the woods.

In 1630 New England, a struggling farming household falls into a panic once their youngest son mysteriously disappears in a wisp of a second, with only swathes of forest around. The creeping horror of the film lies in the way it holds back, making the sudden grotesqueries all the more effective.



4. Lights Out (2016):

A family has to deal with some of them not being able to tell when the lights go out at night.

 

As a young girl, Rebecca could, terrifyingly enough, never actually tell when the lights went out at night. Now the same thing is happening to her little brother, and things might just get loco ese! If you're scared of things that go bump in the night, maybe you should opt out. 



5. Bone Tomahawk (2015):

A group of men set off to rescue people captured by brutal troglodytes in the harsh West.

This American horror Western (what a genre combo!) sees four men set out to rescue a group of people captured by a bunch of cannibalistic troglodytes. It stars Kurt Russell, who's just always great, and the movie mostly follows the route of a regular Western flick filled with cynical witticisms and guttural remarks. That is, until the end, when shit pretty much hits the roof... or the floor, if we're being literal. 



6. The Final (2010):

A group of school outcasts decide to take violent and sadistic revenge on the kids who bullied them.

A bunch of bullied high school kids, led by a dude who looks scarily like the prime candidate for a school shooter, decide to take revenge on the bullies who torment them. This doesn't consist of simple underwear pranks a la Revenge of the Nerds however. This gets a lot more real.


7. Martyrs (2008):

A woman sets out to take revenge on the people who tortured her as a child.

A young woman seeks to bring on the revenge on a group/cult of people who kidnapped and tortured her as a child. However, not everything is as it seems. Brutal, bloody and extreme, this movie has been polarising peeps for almost a decade. 


8. À l'intérieur/ Inside (2007):

A woman has to protect her unborn baby from the attacks of a supernatural being in her house.

 

A pregnant woman has to fend off the vicious attacks of a mysterious, scissor-wielding woman/thing that wants her baby. This French home-invasion-style flick is tense, bloody and truly well-crafted.


9. The Woman (2011):

A lawyer abducts and tries to forcibly civilise a cannibal woman with the help of his family.

 

A lawyer captures and tries to forcibly 'civilise' the last remaining member of a cannibalistic clan with the unwilling help of his family. As messed up as she is however, the family hides a multitude of disturbing secrets of their own, all hidden under a facade of normalcy.


10. The Canal (2014):


A depressed film archivist starts losing his sanity after moving into a supposedly haunted house with his family.

David and his family move into a new house, dismissing rumours of it being haunted (worst idea ever). There, he gets an old film reel that just royally fucks his head up. This Irish horror fest was directed by Ivan Kavanagh, and stars Rupert Evans.


11. Session 9 (2001):

An asbestos removal crew starts experiencing strange occurrences while working at an abandoned mental asylum.

Things start to get a little crazy among an asbestos abatement crew working in, wait for it, an abandoned asylum building! Now that the setting's all...set, go ahead and enjoy this psychological horror flick, it's a cult hit.


12. Don't Breathe (2016):

A bunch of petty thieves break into a blind old man's house, but he isn't as helpless as he looks.

Three kids break into the house of a blind veteran thinking it'll be easy money. As you might have figured out by now, he might be blind, but he sure ain't helpless. It's tense, chilling and stars Stephen Lang, who we all just love to loathe. 


13. The Children (2008):

Two holidaying families have to deal with the sudden murderous tendencies of their brood of children.

 

Two families gathered for a bit of a holiday at an English estate have to deal with a whole lot more than bad weather when the kids start acting a little... strange. As we all know, the only things creepier than scary clowns are scary kids, so keep your blanket close and eyelids ready to drop!


14. Honeymoon (2014):

A newly married couple starts having a whole bunch of problems after the wife has a supernatural encounter in a lonely forest.

 

A couple heads to a charming cabin in the woods for their honeymoon, but after a small solo sojourn in the woods, the wife isn't exactly in the honeymoon mood, so to speak. The film stars Ygritte (GoT) otherwise known as Rose Leslie!


15. Eden Lake (2008):

A couple hoping for a romantic weekend at a lake have to deal with a breed of terrifying teenagers seldom experienced before.

 

Jenny and Steve just want a sweet, romantic weekend away at a lake, but a couple of pesky (to put it mildly) teenagers throw all their plans to shit. Mind you, this movie is nothing like Neighbours! Also, this British flick stars Michael
