Diwali also known as Deepawali, is celebarted on 30th Oct, 2016, This is an ancient Hindu festival which is celebrated by everyone with lot of zeal. This festival occurs on the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksha of the Hindu calendar month of Ashwin each year.This festival is celebrated all around the globe with lot of zeal and enthusiasm. Diwali is one of the most famous festivals of the year. On this day people light diyas and draw rangolis to welcome Goddess Lakshmi in to their homes.
On the day of Diwali, people place diyas inside and outside their homes and pray to Goddess Lakshmi for wealth and prosperity. Before Diwali, the nights are dark but on the five days of this auspicious festival, the dark nights give way to diyas or kandils, making the entire week memorable. Diwali is basically a five days celebrated festival which begins from Dhanteras, Naraka Chaturdasi, Padva and ends on Bhai Dooj day. Diwali festival signifies the victory of light over darkness.
The word ‘Diwali‘ is derived from Sanskrit word “Deepavali” which means “a series of lights”. Deep means light and avail means series. On the auspicious day of Diwali – people draw various designs of Rangoli on the floor in Indian homes on festive occasions.
According to the mythological myth, Goddess Laxmi is god of wealth and beauty. She is also the wife of Lord Vishnu and bhakts offer gifts and grants for her auspicious blessings. People also think that the happier Goddess will be, the more she will grant her blessings on them. This day is the main event of Diwali and it’s extremely important to keep the house clean and tidy. As it is said that, Goddess visits and likes cleanliness. Laxi Puja is performed especially by women and business men and is also believed that Goddess visits and grants lot of wealth on the night of Diwali.
Before the actual festival starts, people start cleaning, renovating, and decorating their homes. Devotees offer prayers to Goddess Lakshmi, who is considered as the goddess of wealth and prosperity. After puja, people ignite firecrackers, do lot of shopping and exchange sweets among their loved ones.
