The New York post once described him as a ‘Man Who Gave Us AIDS’ and well, that’s true to some extent because, for almost 36 years, America believed in it.

Gaétan Dugas, also known as Patient Zero was a globe trotter and a sexually insatiable French Canadian flight attendant. He’s been allegedly charged with bringing AIDS to America in the 1980s, either from Haiti or Africa.

A lot of people bought the argument, that Mr Dugas was the centre of this massive plague, but nearly 30 years after his death, it has been proved otherwise.

A series of genetic analysis of stored blood samples, bolstered by some intriguing historical detective work, scientists on Wednesday declared the man innocent.

The researchers concluded that America was HIV-stricken long before the concept of ‘Patient Zero ’ was titled. It was carried from Zaire to Haiti around 1967, from there to New York around 1971, reaching San Francisco in 1976.

Dugas, who was hired by Air Canada in 1974 started visiting gay bars in America during that time, and his blood sample taken in 1983 contains the same virus that was already affecting a lot of men of that era.

The researchers also cleared the air about the “patient zero” — initially ,the man wasn’t addressed with that titled. In fact, in an early epidemiological study of cases, he was designated Patient O, for “outside Southern California”. And as the papers circulated, this man was held responsible for a nation-wide epidemic.
