Hockey legend Mohammed Shahid passes away, five things to know about him





Olympian Mohammed Shahid on Wednesday passed away after battling kidney and liver problems at a Gurgaon hospital at the age of 56.


Earlier this month, the legend was airlifted from Varanasi and admitted to Medanta hospital in Gurgaon, after a bout of jaundice and dengue made his condition worse.


Here are some interesting tidbits about him:


  • Born in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh on April 14, 1960, he made his international debut in 1979 at the age of 19 against France at the Junior World Cup.



  • He was part of the gold-medal winning team at the 1980 Moscow Olympics, where he played under the captaincy of V Bhaskaran.



  • Shahid captained India during the 1985-86 season. He was known for his exquisite dribbling skills and formed a great pair with Zafar Iqbal.



  • He was part of the silver-medal winning team at the Delhi Asian Games of 1982 and won bronze in 1986 Seoul Asiad.




  • The Arjuna Award was bestowed on him in 1981 and he also received the Padma Shri in 1986.
