Hal Robson-Kanu came on from the bench and was constantly patrolling the forward line when Aaron Ramsey made another surging run and toe poked the ball inside the box. The Welsh substitute scuffed a shot and the ball rolled past the flat-footed Slovakian keeper and into the net to make it 2-1 in the Group B, Euro 2016 match. It was not as though the Welsh had outclassed their opponents but certainly were the better side, created more chances, and importantly looked like making good use of it. Gareth Bale had put Wales in the lead with an expertly taken free-kick. It sparked off wild celebrations and at that point, and the British Isles side were making good use of possession, buoyed by the goal.
There were a few chances towards the end and the early part of the second half for Slovakia. Going behind, they came back strongly and hit the ground running straightaway. Joe Allen played a poor back-pass, that almost resulted in a goal. Slovakia finally came back in the game and equalised through Ondrej Duda, who perfectly let the ball let to get his left foot and shot diagonally across goal and past Danny Ward and into the net.
The crowd acted as the 12th man for the Welsh, who kept coming at the Slovaks, who were fast running out of steam and Robson-Kanu, who came close with an effort earlier scored with a scuffed shot. Wales had a few nervy moments late in the game but Ashley Williams and co did enough to hold on to their lead. There were loud cheers the final whistle; it remarked Wales’ first win in a major tournament since 1958. For a major tournament, every team needs their big players to step up, Ramsey and importantly, Bale stepped up in style.
