Footy Headlines has struck gold once again
as they have got their hands on the 2016-17 kit of the Los Merengues.
Though the kit colour remains mostly white, as per tradition, there are
in fact a few notable auxiliary touches here and there.
Besides
the usual Adidas logo and the Real Madrid crest, the shirt bears a
couple of vertical purple lines on both sides. It also has a collar
attached to it like every other year. The kit also sports white shorts
and socks.
The history of the Real Madrid kit
As far as the history of Real Madrid’s
kit is concerned, though its colour is traditionally all white,
there are a couple of exceptions to it. The very first match the club
played, was against itself and, therefore, had to adopt a blue and red
oblique stripe on one of the team’s shirts in order to differentiate one
from another.
Though the colour of
their shirts and shorts has always been white, believe it or not, the
Los Merengues once used to wear black socks. Later, the black socks were
replaced by dark blue ones which subsequently were changed to white.
Though
the Madrilenians have always maintained an all-white kit, the 1925-26
season was an exception when the colour of the shorts was changed to
black. However, after being eliminated from the Spanish Cup by Barcelona
with a 1–5 defeat in Madrid and a 2–0 defeat in Catalonia, the then
chairman of Real, Pedro Parages decided to return to an all-white kit,
as he thought that any other kit would bring bad luck to the club.
The
club's traditional away kit’s colour has always been either blue or
purple. Also, on 23 November 1947, in a match against their city rivals
Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano Stadium, the Los Blancos became the
first Spanish team to wear numbered shirts.
However,
talking about the recent times, The Los Blancos haven’t won the league
since the 2011-12 season and this year too, their chances remain slim.
With nine more matches to go, Real Madrid are currently at the third
position below both of their arch rivals Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.
As Barcelona
are sitting pretty at the top of the table with 72 points, the white
part of Madrid has been able to secure only 60 points. Their city rivals
are currently four points clear of them. Can the new kit bring the Los
Blancos some luck in the next season?
