ICC World T-20:Points table and qualification scenario, How can India qualify for Semi-Finals

The Super 10 stage of the ICC T20 World Cup 2016 has completed a week. Teams are fighting hard to book a spot in the semifinal. New Zealand and West Indies have won both their games. India are much better placed after beating Bangladesh, so is England after overcoming Afghanistan. Pakistan, South Africa, Australia and Sri Lanka have won one game each.

The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semifinal. Let’s have a look at the points table for both the groups and also the qualification scenarios for both of them.

Group 1

West Indies maintained their winning run in the tournament by beating Sri Lanka. England after their loss against the West Indies came back strongly to beat South Africa in a thrilling encounter where they chased an improbable target of 229. However, they still languish at the 4th spot courtesy of a poor run-rate.

South Africa shocked by the defeat against England, defeated Afghanistan to get their tournament back on track. Sri Lanka looked miserable against the Windies after their win against Afghanistan. So all the teams barring the West Indies are precariously placed at the moment.

England beat Afghanistan and South Africa will square off against the West Indies in their next encounter.

Group 1 Qualification scenario

  • England beat Afghanistan and if they beat Sri Lanka in their last game and West Indies beat South Africa, then England will qualify for the semifinal.
  • If South Africa beat West Indies and Sri Lanka in their last two games, and England lose to Sri Lanka, then South Africa will qualify.
  • If West Indies beat South Africa and Sri Lanka beat England and South Africa, then Sri Lanka will qualify.

  • If India beat Australia, then India qualify for SFs whatever happens in the other matches.
  • If Australia beat Pakistan and India, then the Australia will reach the SFs.
  • If Pakistan beat Australia and Australia beat India, then it comes to run-rate between India, Pakistan, Australia (which is a big disadvantage for India).
