6 types of relationships you will find only in India

There are basically 6 types of relationships you are going to find in urban India, or so says the author of the recently launched book, 'Dating & Marriage Diaries in Urban India' which exposes the ground reality of the search for the perfect spouse - loving, caring, attractive.

#1 Money is the King

This is a heavily materialistic relationship in which money indeed buys love. This relationship is characterized by affluence and spending lots of money is essential to keep the relationship going. This means there has to be frequent eating out, iPhones, designer clothes, fancy shoes and lots of shopping. Maxed out credit cards and a big EMI bill every month are hallmarks of this relationship.

Best thing: You get to use the latest version of iPhone as soon as it is released.
Worst thing: It is a shallow relationship
Tip to improve: Money is important but excessive materialism is bad for any relationship.

#2 Helicopter parents & extended families

In such relationships, parents dictate everything right from the color of the bedsheet to the type of clothes one should wear! Parents are concerned about their kids and that's normal up to a point. But excessive interference in your relationship by parents often has negative consequences. Things become even worse if one has to deal with a large joint family system.

Best thing: Parents are around you for any and every assistance you may or may not need!
Worst thing: You are not allowed to make any decisions without their approval.
Tip to improve: Parents, please stop hovering over your kids who are grown up adults now.

#3 My way or highway

There are some women (and men) too who have an excessively dominating attitude. She will decide every single thing about the relationship. Want to hang out with your best buddies for a game of cricket? Not allowed. Want to buy your favorite suit or shoes?

Better ask for the permission first. Should you dare disobey, be ready for a lengthy argument or a fight or both. If all else fails then she will deploy her most effective weapon, tears! And suddenly you are the guilty one.

Best thing: The guy does not need to use his brain at all because he has to obey whatever she tells him.
Worst thing: Poor guy is completely under her control.
Tip to improve: Both partners should show flexibility and understanding.

#4 No time for each other

The way trees cannot survive or grow without water, relationships cannot thrive if one or both partners are excessively busy. While chasing careers and dreams, people often forget that they are humans and not robots. People want to be loved and cared for and build happy memories. Excessive work stress can lead to burn out not only affecting your relationships but eventually work too.

Best thing: You get all the space you need for yourself.
Worst thing: You in fact get so much space that you could fit the entire neighborhood in it!
Tip to improve: Spending enough time together is important to keep any relationship going.

#5 Zero or low compatibility relationship

Sometimes, I have come across people both in India and abroad who happen to be in a relationship (dating or marriage) where there is really no love or compatibility but somehow they are together for the sake of being together. Two people might have completely different backgrounds and approaches to life and there is nothing which can really make the relationship work.

Best thing: Nothing good here.
Worst thing: You feel exhausted trying to make an unworkable thing work.
Tip to improve: It's time to reevaluate your relationship if there is zero or very less compatibility between you and your other half.

#6 Happy go lucky

There is a saying, "The happiest people don't necessarily have the best of everything but they make the most of everything." This statement perfectly describes a happy relationship. Cheerful, radiant, made for each other and happy are some of the words that come to your mind when you think of this relationship. You can completely let go of yourself and enjoy each other's company without worrying. Just like fine wine, it only gets better and stronger with the passage of time.

Best thing: The world and everything around you seems nicer. You look forward to waking up each morning and experience all the joys that life brings.
Worst thing: You really hope that this wonderful relationship never ends
Tip to improve: Never take this happiness for granted and continue to invest time and effort into your relationship.
