Bhopal: A day after a woman bobbitised her brother-in-law, Madhya Pradesh police are flummoxed over the motive behind the gruesome attack in which the accused even tried to gouge his intestines. Forensic science laboratory (FSL) unit has preserved the severed genital as evidence for prosecution and trial of this case, even as investigators called it a rare of the rarest case.
The 32-year-old woman had walked into Churhat police station in Sidhi district early on Thursday with the chopped organ, claiming it was the only way she could protect herself from rape. Before shocked cops could spring into action or rush medical support, the bobbitised man committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree near his home.
"There will be a twist in the story. We are looking into minute details of crime," says Aarti Charate, station house officer (SHO) of Churhat police station, who is leading the investigation. Initial probe suggests she had an intimate relationship with her brother-in-law for a couple of months. FSL team also recovered hair from the spot.
Five months ago, she disappeared from her home and returned only after a missing persons complaint was lodged by her husband. Her brother-in-law too had attempted suicide by consuming poison a couple of days ago. Both cases are on record, said police. Police officers are trying to connect the dots to find motive behind this incident.
"There was an iron rod in the room which she could have used to attack the man instead of picking up the sickle. So one thing is clear she had a plot to chop his genitals," says the SHO.
So what prompted her to attack? "We will find this out in next 48 hours," the officer told TOI. Police officer said, "When he entered the room at around 4.30 am, she was mentally prepared for the attack. She asked him to lie down and put off the chimney. It took a minute for her to use the sickle on him," the officer said.
He ran outside, around 300 meters from the spot, took a rope, climbed to a mango tree and hanged himself," said the investigating officer.
Investigators are now waiting for autopsy report to ascertain whether he bled to death or died of hanging. There is a confusion on hanging because the deceased had both feet touching the ground. FSL team has found footprints and blood stains from the scene of crime to the mango tree he was found hanging. If autopsy reports suggest he died of bleeding, she would be charged with murder, said police.
She was produced before court and sent to jail on Friday. Her husband returned from Nasik on Saturday. Police also recorded statement of woman's seven-year-old daughter who was witness to the crime.
