Virat Kohli, the Indian Test skipper, has been nominated as Board of Control for Cricket India's (BCCI) international cricketer of the 2014-15 season and will be awarded the prestigious Polly Umrigar Trophy, the Indian cricket board announced on Thursday (December 31). Kohli becomes the second cricketer, after Sachin Tendulkar, to receive the recognition more than once, having won it earlier for his performances in 2011-12.
Mithali Raj bags the honour of being India's best woman cricketer.
Joining Kohli and Raj in the awardees list is Syed Kirmani, wicket-keeper of the India's World Cup winning 1983 squad, who will be feted with the CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award.
Kohli, 27, enjoyed a fruitful season, which he began by leading the One-Day International (ODI) side to a 5-0 whitewash of Sri Lanka at home, in the absence of MS Dhoni. He took over as full-time captain of the Test side on the tour of Australia in December-January, following Dhoni's retirement and finished the four-match Test series with a staggering 692 runs at 86.50 - the most by an Indian batsman in Australia. In the process, he became the first batsman in Test history to score three hundreds in his first three innings as captain.
He followed the high of the Australia Test series by hitting a century in India's World Cup opener against Pakistan in Adelaide. While his form tapered towards the fag end of the season, Kohli remained, statistically, among India's most consistent batsmen.
Meanwhile, Robin Uthappa, Shardul Thakur, Vinay Kumar, Deepak Hooda and Jalaj Saxena were among those who would be feted for their performances on the domestic circuit with the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) picking up the award for the best associate member for completing the treble of title wins - Ranji Trophy, Irani Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy in 2015.
