The Year's First Release Prove to Be A Big Blockbuster as the Nana Patekar-starrer 'Natsamrat' Collects more than Rs 10 crores in first weekend at box office.'Natsamrat' Also Proves That Nana Patekar Is The King Of Actors

The box office too seems to be smiling at Marathi cinema, which has left Bollywood far behind cinematically. The Nana Patekar-starrer Natsamrat Asa Nat Hone Nahi has got the biggest opening weekend in Marathi cinema ever.

The film, directed by Mahesh Manjrekar, which opened to packed houses on New Year, has been flaunting housefull boards not only in centres like Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur but also smaller tier II cities and towns across Maharashtra.

The cash registers haven’t stopped ringing as it grossed more than Rs 10 crore on the opening weekend itself. With nearly 1600 shows running daily in over 400 screens across the country, many are calling this a renaissance of sorts for the more evolved tastes that Marathi audiences have always shown.

Nana Patekar was cackling away like a child when dna spoke to him excited with reports of the response. “Let’s not look at this only in terms of collections like some others do. The main point is the audience is signalling the film industry that it is more than ready for good, new subjects treated in a good manner.”

"All praise for the entire team," he said in his signature style, “Chaangleech bhatti zamlee hotee. (Everything had come together beautifully) and the proof is there for all to see.”

Film historian Mukul Joshi was all praise for the soul-stirring script and dialogues. “The way Abhijeet Deshpande and Kiran Yadnopavit have adapted original playwright VV Shirwadkar’s dialogues for the film is remarkable,” he said and added, “Marathi is the cradle of Indian cinema and has always shown the way to bridge popularity and rich content.

It seemed to have lost its way in between especially the 80s and 90s. The huge response to films like Natsamrat will encourage more and more filmmakers to make films which are meaningful. It will wean them away from much of Bollywood’s starry nonsense which parades as cinema.”

He pointed out how the moist-eyed packed audience on Monday afternoon in a Goregaon multiplex were clapping in response to every dialogue. “I saw many break down as they got so entwined in what was happening on screen.”

Needless to say the great casting and vision by director Mahesh Manjrekar and the stellar performances by not only Nana Patekar but others like Vikram Gokhake and Medha Manjrekar have only helped in creating this epoch-making film.

Critical acclaim has been pouring in from the trial previews, but now the audience’s response shows that it is getting the viewer's nod too. The King Lear-like Ganpatrao Belwalkar, a theatre actor par excellence who foolishly believes his children will look after him after retirement.

Reacting to the box office’s response, director Mahesh Manjarekar said, “Marathi cinema has become synonymous with good cinema in the recent times. Making Natsamrat was like a dream come true for me. Our team had put its heart and soul to together to make it a reality. I am overwhelmed with the response our film is getting from both the audience and film critics.”

Echoing him, Nittin Keni, CEO of Zee Studios; the company that presented and distributed the film admitted that the success of Natsamrat has created history. “This is as important to us as the Marathi film industry. It feels proud to be part of a Marathi film which is breaking boundaries yet again. The response of Natsamrat has proved how mature Marathi audiences have become,” he said and added, “The viewers and our team are equal shareholders in the success of the film.”
