Worst plane crashes in the history of aviation



A Russian passenger plane with 224 passengers crashed in in central Sinai, on Saturday. All passengers onboard the aircraft are feared dead in the crash. The Metrojet flight #7K9268 had disappeared over Egypt 23 min after departure from Sharm el-Sheikh international airport.

Here's recounting some of the worst plane crashes in the history of aviation:


  1. 1977: After two Boeing 747s collided on a runway in Tenerife 583 people died. 
  2. 1985: A Boeing 747 flight of the Japan Air Lines suffered mechanical failure crashed into Mount Osutaka. 520 passengers were declared dead after the crash.
  3. 1991: A Nationair DC-8-61 chartered by Nigeria Airways to transport pilgrims to Mecca crashed after catching fire and killed 261 people.
  4. 1994: 264 people died after an Airbus A300 of the China Airlines crashed at Nagoya airport in Japan due to pilot error.
  5. 1996: A Boeing 747 of the Saudi Arabian Airlines and a Soviet-era Ilyushin-76 plane of the Air Kazahkstan collided mid-air in India killing 349 people.
  6. 1997: Flight 801, another Boeing 747, from South Korea crashed into a jungle. The plane was destroyed and 228 people were killed, leaving 26 survivors.
  7. 1998: A Swissair jetliner from New York's Kennedy airport to Geneva, Switzerland, went down off the coast of Nova Scotia, Canada killing 229 people aboard.
  8. 2001: After the tail fin of an Airbus A300 snapped right after takeoff from New York, the plane crashed into the Queens neighbourhood of New York City killing 265 people.
  9. 2009: An Air France Flight 447 from Rio de Janiero to Paris went missing over the Atlantic Ocean with 228 passengers and crew onboard. Two years later, French authorities confirmed a crash due to equipment malfunction. All on board are feared dead. 
  10. 2014: 239 people aboard the Malaysia Airlines' Flight MH37 that went missing in 2014 are now feared dead. This is the second deadliest incident in Malaysia Airlines' history.
