Diwali or Deepavali - the festival of lights is here. Diwali is one of the most celebrated festivals in India and is celebrated across the world with a lot of zeal and enthusiasm. Deepavali symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. It falls on the day of ‘Amavasya’ or new moon.
The word ‘Diwali‘ is derived from the Sanskrit word “Deepavali” which means “a series of lights”. Deep means light and avail means series. On the auspicious day of Diwali – people draw various designs of Rangoli on the floor in Indian homes on festive occasions.
In the Hindu mythology as depicted in the holy epic Ramayana, Diwali is the day, Lord Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman reached Ayodhya after an exile of 14 years and defeating demon king Ravana.
On this day Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity and wealth, is worshipped. According to Vedic legend, on the night of Diwali, Goddess Lakshmi married Lord Vishnu.
The five-day celebrations begin with Dhanteras and conclude with Bhai Dooj.
