It was on 26 January 1950 that the Indian constitution came into effect, a fact that is etched in our minds through years of educational conditioning.




For almost 70 years since then, marching contingents, tanks, military bands and motored vehicles have indulged in a pre-planned pilgrimage, one that is like none other in the world.




But how was Republic Day, as we know it now, celebrated in 1950? A rare archival video online shows Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru waving to the crowd as a parade follow.
