14 Iconic Movie Roles These Hollywood Actors Rejected, And Later Regretted Not Doing

Many actors believe that they don’t pick a role - instead the role picks them. However, some actors rejected roles completely when the roles tried to pick them. And fortunately or unfortunately, these roles became classic over time, possibly making them regret their choices. 


Here are 14 iconic roles that could have been completely different had these actors taken them up.

1. Leonardo DiCaprio – Peter Parker in Spider-Man



Leonardo DiCaprio was reportedly offered the role of Spider-Man in 2002. However, he let the role pass on to his good friend Tobey Maguire as he said, ‘I didn’t feel ready to put on the suit yet!’.

2. John Travolta – Forrest in Forrest Gump

Forrest Gump was initially offered to John Travolta, who then declined the legendary role. When the Tom Hanks-starrer became a classic, the Grease actor admitted that turning down Forrest Gump wasn’t one of the best decisions of his life.

3. Hugh Jackman – James Bond in Casino Royale

Hugh Jackman would have made a great Bond, but he thought otherwise. He didn’t wanted to get typecast into an action role and therefore he decided to say no to the legendary role.

4. Will Smith – Neo in the Matrix Trilogy

Will Smith was approached by the Matrix makers for the memorable role of Neo. However, Smith cold-shouldered the role as he was sceptical over the film's advanced special effects, especially the use of "bullet time." He also confessed later that he would have messed up the role.

5. Tom Selleck – Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones

Tom Selleck received wide fame with shows like Magnum P.I and Friends. The moustached actor had to choose between starring in Indiana Jones and Magnum P.I and Selleck selected the latter - only to regret how big the franchise grew as compared to his TV show.

6. Jack Nicholson – Michael Corleone in The Godfather

Jack Nicholson believed he wasn’t a perfect fit for the role. He confessed in an interview to Movieline that he felt Al Pacino was destined for the role. "Back then I believed that Indians should play Indians and Italians should play Italians … There were a lot of actors who could have played Michael, myself included, but Al Pacino was Michael Corleone. I can't think of a better compliment to pay him", he said.

7. Sandra Bullock – Maggie Fitzgerald in ‘Million Dollar Baby’

Sandra Bullock had timing issues as she was also working on Miss Congeniality 2. Bullock did not regret her decision. “When things like that happen, that's the way they're supposed to be", she said, when asked what she felt after Swank won an Oscar for the role.

8. Harrison Ford – Oscar Schindler in The Schindler’s List

Ford decided to turn down this role for a legitimate reason. He didn't want his stardom and popularity to take away from the hard message that was the core of this movie. 

9. Mark Wahlberg and Joaquin Phoenix - Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist in The Brokeback Mountain

The iconic characters were supposed to be portrayed by Mark Wahlberg and Joaquin Phoenix, but finally went to Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhall.

11. Matt Damon – Harvey Dent in The Dark Knight

Due to the scheduling of other movies, Matt Damon could not play Harvey Dent inThe Dark Knight, which eventually was played by Aaron Eckhart.

12. Al Pacino – Edward Lewis in The Pretty Woman,  Han Solo in The Star Wars

Pacino ‘didn’t understand’ the Star Wars script and thought he would make a mess of it! He also couldn’t do Pretty Woman which then went to Richard Gere.

13. Brad Pitt - One of the lead astronauts in Apollo 13

14. Gwyneth Paltrow – Rose in Titanic

Paltrow turned down the epic role of Rose DeWitt Buckater in Titanic,later made famous by Kate Winslet. She was director James Cameron’s first choice for Rose. However she said that she couldn't change the past and that her choices were part of something greater.
