Friends or foes, the two top Khans of Bollywood - Shah Rukh
and Salman - are always compared with each other. They have polarised
the film industry into two camps, and the war of words has never ceased
to entertain us. Though the box office has been a friend to both, the
small screen seems to be a Salman loyalist. Salman has been the
torchbearer of shows, from Dus ka dum to Big Boss, and has become their identity. Now it could be a matter of luck, but there indeed are a few factors that have favoured Salman.
SRK's TV debut
Shah Rukh made his TV debut (post-stardom) as the host of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC)-3
in 2007. Most people like me who had been following the show because of
Mr Bachchan were not pleased with SRK replacing him and trying to fit
in his shoes. Expectedly, Shah Rukh fell short. Mr Bachchan, with his
grace, experience and strong command over Hindi, was a favourite of the
masses. And as they say, to solve any riddle, begin from the beginning.
So I think most of the answer lies in the beginning of SRK's stint as a
TV-host.
Being single
"Salman, aap shaadi kab karoge?" And the blush that
follows helps "Bhai" floor many dying-to-be "Bhabhis". His innocent
flirting, his history of beautiful girlfriends and his popularity among
ladies in Bollywood, makes Salman an undisputed darling of his fans.
Not trying too hard
SRK tries too hard to impress. His actions at times exude
desperation. He depends a lot on his friends in the industry to make his
show the talk of the town. But alas! It ends up in going against him.
On the other hand, Salman is more natural and composed.
Filmfare arrogance
SRK has been a game changer when it comes to hosting award
functions. He is a master of entertaining the audience with leg-pulling
and self-depreciating humour. But on few occasions, he had crossed the
line, and his arrogance showed up. Even during few episodes of the KBC
that he hosted, he had appeared disdainful towards a few contestants.
And since TV is mostly a common man's platform, someone like Salman, who
manages to do a better job at concealing his ego and other negative
traits, has emerged more successful as a host.
Connect with the contestants
If we ignore a few instances when Salman has been visibly
biased towards a few contestants, he had largely been fair to all. He
appears very involved in the show Bigg Boss and well aware of
every nitty-gritty of the housemates. Thanks to the format of the show,
Salman also often gets a chance to deliver impressive one-liners on life
and relationships.
Being Human
Last but not the least, his popular charity organisation
also fetches him the love of the masses. Salman is known to be a
philanthropist. SRK, however, makes most of his TV appearances during
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) matches.
