New Delhi: A day before the wedding, the Khatri household in north
Delhi's Rajpura locality was drowning in perfume. The gathered guests
couldn't stop joking about the prospective groom's undisguised
excitement as he sprayed the whole house repeatedly every couple of
hours. They didn't know he was trying to suppress the stench from his
girlfriend's corpse that lay inside the ventilation shaft.
Police say Naveen Khatri, 23, used up around 70 cans of perfume in the three days that the body lay inside his house. After killing the woman, Arzoo Singh Chauhan, in a fit of rage on February 2, he had panicked and brought the body home in his car. Police say a family member probably advised him to bring it home and get rid of it after the wedding.
The body lay in the car all night, covered with a sheet.Early next morning, he carried it inside and hid it in his box bed. But within a few hours the decomposing body started stinking. Worried he would be exposed, he dumped it in the shaft and started spraying the house with perfume to suppress the stench.

"Naveen's father Raj Kumar went up to his room to check, thinking that the smell came from a dead animal. But we were shocked on opening the door to the duct and finding a body inside. It had turned black with decomposition," said Ankit Kumar, a relative.
Khatri told police that he killed Arzoo because she threatened to tell everyone about their relationship. As he strangled her inside his car, she struggled to get out and dropped her bag and a shoe on the road at Nangal Dewat near the airport. "She was overpowered," said an officer.
Her family , however, suspects she was murdered inside the Khatris' house since the initial autopsy report says she was strangled almost four days before her body was found. "How did one man carry the body upstairs without anyone even noticing it? There must be foul play," said Arzoo's father Sanjeev Chauhan.
The Khatris' neighbours told TOI the whole family had a violent streak and frequently got into fights. Ten of them were jailed for bludgeoning a man to death in 2005 over a suspected affair with a family member. They have also been involved in several property disputes.
Naveen Khatri's brother Sandeep has been detained for questioning in connection with Arzoo's murder while his father Raj Kumar is on the run.
