The Kapil Sharma Show to go off air? Channel not keen on renewing contract

The Kapil Sharma Show

Following the spat involving comedians Kapil Sharma and Sunil Grover last week and the ensuing boycott of The Kapil Sharma Show by Grover, Ali Asgar and Chandan Prabhakar, the show is reported to go off air.

Mid-Day reports that the channel, Sony Entertainment Television, was planning to renew its contract with the show for a Rs 106 crore deal but has decided to pull the plug on the show. The reason behind the same is multi-fold. Firstly, the core members of the team did not show up at the time of the shooting as a sign of protest for Sharma's misbehavior towards them.

Secondly, the channel failed to rope in prominent film personalities to appear as guests on the show. The reason behind that could be the reports of Sharma's lofty behavior and lack of professionalism. Thirdly, The Indian Express reports that Prabhakar was concerned that the TRPs of the show had been constantly decreasing over the past few months.

Zee News reports that Sharma has cancelled all the shoots of the show and left for Bikaner where he is currently shooting for his film, Rajiv Dhingra's comedy Firangi. He will be back only for the next shoot on 29 March when Asgar is expected to join him. The Indian Express reports states that Asgar could not make it to the last three shoots as he was unwell, but will return for the 29 March shoot.

It is alleged that Sharma, in an intoxicated state, hurled a shoe at Grover who was preventing him from ill treating the crew. Sharma went on to slap him repeatedly until the cabin crew broke it up. Though Sharma apologized to Grover on Twitter, Grover replied with a rather stingy note asking Sharma to be more grateful. Grover has reportedly quit The Kapil Sharma Show and has no plans to return even for double the fee.
