WWE Elimination Chamber 2017: Bray Wyatt's Win Shows Why Event Should Be WrestleMania Season Staple

Bray Wyatt claimed his first WWE Championship Sunday night in an entertaining main event and the triumphant, somewhat overproduced, return of The Elimination Chamber.

After being dormant as a major pay-per-view event, WWE Elimination Chamber returned Sunday night, and WWE would be wise to never let it go away again.

In recent years, WWE has run into trouble fitting its massive structure into new-age stadiums, mainly because large videoboards—like the $40 million screen in AT&T Stadium—exist where The Chamber would have been. WWE has since made slight changes to adjust to the times, and The Elimination Chamber could have a long-term future afterall.

With the ability to host either world championship or No. 1 Contender opportunities, The Elimination Chamber can easily become a fixture of WrestleMania season, which will raise its profile and allow WWE to recreate the successful branding of The Royal Rumble, which is WWE’s second-most popular pay-per-view.

Last year’s Royal Rumble drew 91,000 buys in an era where WWE’s pay-per-view business is just about dead.

The Elimination Chamber will carry that same prestige if WWE continues to position it in such a way that its results will alter the road to WrestleMania.

By being a true fabric of WWE’s most lucrative quarter, not only will social media impressions and WWE subscribers remain stellar, but sales of Elimination Chamber-related merchandise—like the Elimination Chamber playset which retails for $69.99 at Toys "R" Us—can bolster WWE’s wide variety of consumer products.

In Q4 2016, revenue for consumer products increased 16% to 27.8 million as online sales grew through WWEShop.com. The division brought in operating income of just under $10 million. Meanwhile, operating income for live events increased by over three million from the previous year to $41 million.

If WWE is able to successfully leverage WrestleMania season with Elimination Chamber, it will only evolve as a legitimately profitable event that furthers the momentum for several revenue segments.
