The More You Hit Snooze The More Intelligent, more creative and happier You Are, Apparently

Good news for all you night owls, it turns out that staying up late and sleeping in may be a sign of high intelligence and more comfortable lifestyle.

Contrary to the belief that those who love to indulge the snooze button when the alarm goes off in the morning are lazy, a study from the University of Southampton seems to indicate they’re in fact brilliant.

The study called ‘Why night owls are more intelligent’ indicates that there’s a link between sleeping in and creativity, intelligence and an independent spirit, Business Insider reports.

Their research took 1229 men and women and examined their sleep patterns. They discovered that owls (those who go to bed after 11 pm and get up after 8 am) tended to have more income and a more comfortable lifestyle in general.

Satoshi Kanazawa and Kaja Perina, the study’s authors, believe that humans are better adapted to living and sleeping like our ancestors did. This means going to bed early and getting up early in the morning.

While that was fine to do in a time before wi-fi and other cool inventions, now people tend to stay up socialising later and later but still get up early.

Those of us who happily bash the snooze button every morning on the other hand are adapting to a new modern lifestyle, while those who force themselves out of bed every morning are not.

Basically you’re smart because the snooze button is a recent invention that evolution itself has done nothing to prepare us for and yet you’re already adapting to it.

Kanazawa and Perina also believe that if we learn to listen to our own body’s needs and don’t act like slaves to our clocks, then we’re more likely to pursue our own passions, helping us to be creative and individualist.

Of course this doesn’t mean that sleeping in means you’re a genius or more likely to be successful just that it’s an indicator.

It’s also worth noting that sleeping more than 12 hours a day – like an anthropomorphised cat – gives you a greater chance of suffering an untimely death.

So you know swings and roundabouts…
