Earthquake in North India: Tremors felt in Delhi, Chandigarh; epicentre in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand




An earthquake of significant intensity was reported in Delhi on Monday night. The tremors were felt in other parts of North India as well. The magnitude of earthquake was measured as 5.8 on richter scale.


 However, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) claims that the magnitude of earthquake is 5.6 on richter scale. The epicentre of earthquake is reported to be Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand, ABP News reported. However, some reports claim that the epicentre of the earthquake is 5.8 magnitude.



The earthquake was first reported at 10:35 PM (IST). However, the exact timing is yet to be confirmed by USGC. No casualties were reported by the time this report was first published. The tremors are reportedly originating from a depth of 21 km below the ground.



Apart from Delhi and Uttarakhand, tremors were also felt in parts of Punjab and Haryana as well. The tremors were also reported in regions of Uttar Pradesh, ABP News reported. Experts opine that minimum damage would be caused since the magnitude of earthquake is of relatively smaller magnitude.





People in Delhi and Noida region have rushed towards open regions. Several residents of NCR region have confirmed on social media about the tremors felt in their region. However, no damages to property has been reported so far.



The tremors of highest intensity has been felt in Uttarakhand, where the epicentre of earthquake is located. “The earthquake made us recall the 1991 quakes. Everything in our house was shaking. We all rushed out from our homes, said a resident of Chamboli while speaking to ABP News.
