This Peshawar Beauty Becomes First Pakistani Woman To Defuse Bombs

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Rafia Qaseem Baig has become the first Pakistani woman to join the Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU) in the restive province that frequently witnesses terror attacks.

29-year-old Rafia had joined the police force seven years ago.

According to Baig, a bomb blast that happened near a Sessions Court served motivated her to join the force.

Along with 31 other male members, she was taught about the types of bombs, their identification and ways to defuse them in Nowshera’s School of Explosive Handling.

She had a master’s degree in International Relations. She then pursued another master’s degree in Economics and worked at International Rescue Committee where she developed a passion for law and enrolled in an LLB programme that is currently under way.

Since she was highly qualified, she received job offers in many companies and non-government organisations. However, she opted to join police force in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province when extremists were overtly targeting security forces.

She had undergone training in areas such as Adezai, Michni and Salman Khel in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. She spent 10 days patrolling these localities with a large number of male police personnel.
