Naraka Chaturdashi, Choti Diwali 2016: Date, Muhurat, Puja Vidhi, Mantra & Auspicious timings










Naraka Chaturdashi, is celebrated on 29th October, 2016. This is a Hindu festival which falls on the second day of Diwali. Narak Chaturdashi is celebrated with lot of zeal and enthusiasm. Naraka Chaturdashi has great significance people simply believe that who performs this ritual can avoid going to Narak (Hell). 

It falls on the next day of Dhanteras. According to Hinduism, this festival is celebrated on the 14th day of the half dark moon and the whole day is allotted in  worshiping Mahakali or Goddess Shakti. 

People believe that on that day, Goddess Kali killed the most evil demon Narakasura. The festival is all about dissolving the bad and protecting others like Goddess Kali did. 





Narak Chaturdashi festival holds lot of importance especially for all the Hindus. This occasion is highly regarded because Bhumi (Goddess of Earth) killed her son Narakasur. And hence, on this day people observe fast for the entire day and worship Lord Kuber and Goddess Lakshmi. 

Oil bath or Ubtan is another importance of this occasion. It is always done during moonrise but before the sunrises. People believe that on that day, Kali killed the most evil demon Narakasura. The festival is all about dissolving the bad and protecting others like Goddess Kali did. 






Devotees try to please God and Goddess to seek their divine blessings on this auspicious day. Apart from traditional rituals, delicacies also been prepared which includes Poha as this season of festival is suggested to be during the harvest period. Females apply kajal in the eyes as it helps keeping buri nazar away. People take bath with pleasant powder and gram flour. After this ritual, diyas are lighted and food is offered which includes vermicelli and sweet rice. Lot of bhakts also believes in offering Nivet and on this day getting up earlier than one’s schedule is a must.

The festival is all about dissolving the bad and protecting others like Goddess Kali did. According to old myths there was a demon named Narkasur, ruler of Pragjyotishpur who abducted women and kept them in hisharem. However, he was defeated by Lord Indra, who snatched his earrings and then Bhumi, the Goddess of Earth punished for his dreadful act. 


When Satyabhama, second wife of Krishna came to know it she was furious and prayed to Lord Krishna to grant her power so that she can destroy Naraksur. It is said that Naraksur had a curse wherein he would be killed by a female. By the grace of Lord Krishna Satyabhama beheaded Naraksur and released the imprisoned women from his harem.
